If you're going to play it out of tune, then play it out of tune properly.

Captain Beefheart - terrific range; large vocal palette; loud

No never did. I was in the remote west when the famous tour when The Magic Band shared the bill with Ry Cooder took place. Sure wish I had because in spite of his quirks, his stage shows were excellent. The many bootlegs show that he and the band were great live. There's also good video of The Captain & The Magic Band too.

I saw him twice: firstly in 1972 with the classic Magic Band lineup which was amazing and secondly in 1974 when all of the classic members had left which wasn't half as good.

Good for you!

To have seen Don with the original magic band had to have been great.
The tragic band was a big step backwards for him but the live show I have - pro shot - shows that he was in excellent voice...never sounded stronger in my view.

I have Zoot Horn Rollo's album and it's OK but lacks both the tension and fire of The Magic Band and Don's songs. The guitar playing was good but not as good as Zoot was with Beefheart.

If you've seen the Beat Club video from 1972 that was within weeks of when I saw them. Rockette Morton was wearing the same suit although the Captain was sporting a cloak. I can even remember the road crew unloading the same Orange amplifiers outside the venue. I saw The Magic Band a few years back which really reminded me of the gig.

Yes I am pretty sure that I have that video and it's terrific.
I am pretty sure they never toured in support of Trout Mask Replica. Those poor guys spent the better part of a year rehearsing the album's songs and then they don't get a chance to make a little money appearing live. ??
