10 years ago on Xmas Eve I was stranded at Redcar depot at 5pm with a bus the fitters were struggling to fix. The snow was atrocious and I had to get my bus back over to Whitby and then myself back over to Guisborough. Eventually they gave up and gave me another bus, I limped it back over but it was looking like I wouldn't get home for Xmas. I eventually did by about 10pm.

It's gone down a liitle to -5F and a windchill of of -42F. Exposed flesh can freeze in 4 - 5 minutes at these temps. It's a good day for playing cards in your underground house
Mt Washington is less than 6300 feet I think - it's just that it's in the way of weather systems from the north pole and the jet stream occasionally lowers to just a couple of thousand feet above the summit dragging all sorts of active weather with it.

(I worked outdoors a few times in emergency situations with wind chills of -30F and it was rough.) Eastern North America has worse weather than the west because Arctic air flows from the north west. In North Carolina, there are weather stations on Grandfather mountain and Mount Mitchell[a state park at 6600 feet]the highest mountain in the east and a few times a year, the winds blow in excess of 100 mph for hours.)

It felt like being up Mt Washington in Whitby today, the early snow gave way to wind and horizontal sleet. It promises to be colder tomorrow (2c /36f max) but dry, after that it can do what it likes for six days.

Having to work in harsh weather, and I was on call 24 hours a day, it just plain rough. We got so much ice (glaze) that I had studded snow tires on all four wheels even though most of what I drove was 2 wheel drive. Being responsible for a load of people - like you are - makes it much tougher. wind chill now -46F
