Toots Hibbert - The man who came up with the word reggae (reggay) to describe the music he was playing after he stopped playing ska.

He also had more #1 hits in his home country than anyone else did in their countries including Elvis, in the USA, and the Beatles in the UK. 31.

Toots.

I sent to Jamaica for The Maytals two ska albums, which are excellent, and bought their output up to Reggae Got Soul. I was a major fan for a number of years. West Virginia has quite a few pockets of reggae fans even though it's hard to get a radio signal and hard to find a store that stocks the music. :)

I'm not familiar with Toots & the Maytals, but I've done a bit of research into the ska era.

Avoid the awful remastered versions! :D

Looking at the discographies, as with Lee Perry who also produced ska tunes in the early 60s, artists of this genre released literally hundreds of singles in a very short space of time, yet very few albums. Presumably singles were the record buyers item of choice in Jamaica back then. :)

Never Grow Old was either the first or second Maytals album. The Skatalites backed them on both but I don't think they were credited. It was also the name of a single as you posted.
For some reason, I liked them right away and continued for a number of years. (My records are gone :( so I can't say if it was the first or second)

Thanks - it had a nice primitive sound to it - apparently the studio was not state of the art because the musicianship was good.

Who cares about "state of the art"? I listened to one track that had been digitally remastered and it sounded awful - flat and devoid of any character. The crackly old 7" singles on Youtube sounded as they were intended to be. :)

If you're going to play it out of tune, then play it out of tune properly.
