 Thanky - feels like home.

The tunnel is over a mile long and there are five "windows" three of which a few cars can park in and people can get out and admire the scenery and the drop-off.
Part of the side of the cliff broke away in the early 1950s and it took quite a bit of work to reopen it through the brittle sandstone. They put in a quartz rod to measure stress within the sandstone and I was one of the ones that took a reading weekly and mailed it to Santa Fe where the engineers were.
At the east end of the tunnel is a short trail were you can look back at the cliff and windows, the switchback road, and the 3000+ foot cliffs.

I've done a screenshot of the view at the end of the clip, in full size as per the original source.

That's the south end of the tunnel and the road wends its way down to Pine Creek wash and then intersects with the Zion Canyon Drive. It's not too far down where a person gets the first glimpse of the West Temple which is just at 4000 feet above the road and is the highest point in the canyon area. The west side keeps climbing to the old fire lookout at Lava Point - over 8000 feet above sea level - and the roads ends up at Cedar Breaks National Monument, which was administered by Zion at that time, and its 9 square miles is all above 10,000 feet and has a Bryce Canyon-like limestone wind eroded amphitheatre but is small but more colorful. Just outside the monument is the Brian Head at 11,315 feet with a stone shelter and amazing views. There are quite a few 3000 year old Bristlecone Pines along the rim. My girl friend and I were up at Brian Head one night and looked down on a lively thunderstorm. I'd get sent up there if they had something going on and park cars and provide aid to those who couldn't take the elevation.
Zion, in contrast, is 225 square miles in area.

Yes, I've been lucky that way. Plus, going to national parks up and down the Rocky Mountains fighting fires. I like that fact that each day was different, sometimes radically so.
We had Desert Bighorn sheep and Mountain lions plus more rattlesnakes and scorpions that I would have chosen to have. It was a big change from living near the Baltimore docks I'll say that.
Thanks very much for the photo.

I’m in our office, Yorkshire Coast Radio is on. :wtf:

Someone just emailed them and asked why the fuck they were playing such a tedious pile of wank as Hey Jude by The Beatles. Not quite in those words obviously.
