Stephen Fry explains the laws of cricket, in this case about getting out hitting the ball twice.

I was out 'hit the ball twice' in my last ever innings for local side Baggrow and Blennerhasset when I instinctively batted away a ball that came off my bat and was heading for the stumps. I was taught that you could use only your legs or foot, but not your bat, so i trudged off thinking 'what an idiot'
The umpire was wrong.
You can protect your wicket using your bat. (Law 34)

You were wrong but the umpire cannot be as his decision, according to Law 2.12, is final.

This is possibly more tiresome than football, and precisely why our viewing figures are down.

I’m considering locking this thread.

Watching the T20 England v Pakistan. It is a form of cricket, but as a traditionalist it is not 'proper' cricket. More like baseball which is shit.
However on a Tuesday evening it is better than most other things to watch for a couple of hours. :)

Happy birthday Sir Geoffrey, you fucking legend!

In 1977 (aged 14) I chose this book as prize for academic excellence in High School.

I still have it and looking back at it now I see there is advice for young cricketers to relax before batting, and the illustration suggests a cigarette would help.

Thanks Geoffrey. I now smoke more than 20 a day.

1977 was the year he ran out local favourite Derek Randall at Trent Bridge. And then grafted his way to a century. :)
