I was out 'hit the ball twice' in my last ever innings for local side Baggrow and Blennerhasset when I instinctively batted away a ball that came off my bat and was heading for the stumps. I was taught that you could use only your legs or foot, but not your bat, so i trudged off thinking 'what an idiot'
The umpire was wrong.
You can protect your wicket using your bat. (Law 34)

I was wrong and so was the umpire.
You can protect your wicket using your bat. (Law 34)
You were wrong but the umpire cannot be as his decision, according to Law 2.12, is final.
