I spent a pleasant day at Rick Shaw's place today, he's given this work 'Reclining Figure' by John Winters a whole gallery to itself. I spent the entire visit in that gallery, apart from ten minutes in the toilet.

I nicked this from the local Chinky. I reckon some punter will pay a few quid for it. :)

The next show at Twee Works – by Sharon Balls – will be three rooms of geometric abstraction! A good contrast to Filter King's show which closes on the 17 May. Sharon's show will open on Friday 24 May. Drinks: 6–8pm. I'd get tanked up here 'cos lets face it the paintings are just a load of fucking triangles. The punters seem to pay good money for them though, which is excellent. Sharon first exhibited with Twee Works back in 2015 when nobody else would touch her with a bargepole. Visit the website to view that show and read my Q&A with Sharon by clicking on 'information'. I ask penetrating questions like whether she uses paint and, er, paper.

Untitled (After Rubens’ The Descent), 2018-9. Oil on canvas. By Filter King at Twee Works.

Gallery 3 has a kind of Mediterranean temple feeling. A corridor-like space with a perspective onto a big modernist religious-looking painting clearly improvised from Rubens’ Descent from the Cross. The derivation is unmistakable. There is no cross apparent but the carpentry of the ceiling somehow connects with the little ladder in the foreground of the painting, giving the impression of a wooden skylight in the ceiling. There is, as with four of the other paintings found in this exhibition, a hole cut in the painting allowing light to cast a soft shadow onto the wall behind. Fuck knows why he does this, it's just pretentious IMO.

Filter King's exhibition at Three Works closes on the 17 May. Next up: Sharon Balls. Opens 24 May.

Filter King wants to paint my portrait. It's a pastiche of Van Gogh. :)
