Yes, and I love the photos on Greasy Roads' thread as well. :)

Ah but does Greasy Roads put links to the songs in his reviews? Does he fuck, he just likes to show off his flash turntable which probably doesn't work for all we know.

I'll do 1982 later.

Why the fuck would I have a turntable that doesn't work? :wtf:

Indeed why would you? That's not to say that you haven't though.

Are you in a particularly awkward mood? I'll photograph the next one on my other turntable. :grrr:

How do we know that one works?

Will you please stop spamming my thread with shit music. :grrr:

That's a nice looking swirl Vertigo copy of The Valentyne Suite Greasy Roads. :)

Paul Hanley doesn't want to read about The fucking Valentyne Suite. :swear:

I'd be surprised if he wasn't an admirer of the late Jon Hiseman.

Fucks sake. :duh:

Another fred rooned. :cry2:

1983

Soon after Marc Riley was shown the door, another Fall member was to leave. I don't recall the whys and wherefores, but Kay Carroll was next to go. I'm pretty sure however that it crossed MES' mind of winding the group up at this point, so what to do? Well obviously release another classic album and a couple of equally top notch singles of course. We now have a Fall without a woman's touch for the first time. This was not to last thankfully as a young Brix barged into the group's after gig party one night on the American tour and demanded to marry the singer. This he duly did, and Brix was gently edged into the line-up. (I made a bit of that up.) Perverted By Language to me sounded a bit flat on early listenings, obviously missing a major member being absent. Tinny was another word I'd used to describe it, but I was wrong. MES I recall had said there had been "too much melody" on RTL, and the new album was to rectify that. So while yes, melody was a rare part of the PBL sound, wilfully discordant performances most certainly weren't - it didn't take me long to appreciate this. The two perfect singles, 'The Man Whose Head Expanded' and 'Kicker Conspiracy' were as compelling as highlight tracks on the album, 'Eat Y'Self Fitter', 'Garden', 'Smile', 'Hexen Definitive/Strife Knot' all masterpieces but all very different from each other.

So now I have to pick one, and just to be as wilfully obtuse as The Fall were being, I'm picking 'Neighbourhood Of Infinity'. I know in my head it should be the astonishing 'Smile', but every time I play PBL, I go back and play NOI a second time. As per usual, it's lyrically challenging, though there aren't actually many lyrics to mull over, it's basically a list of what The Man Whose Head Expanded knew - who stole cafe's collection box, who wore a red scarf to remind him of his fiancee, that sort of thing, along with references to an admired Link Wray. It really should be simple to understand but it isn't. What I love the most is the part following the 20 second Craig and drummer (Paul or Karl or both) intro where Steve Hanley slams in with a filthy great bassline which rumbles along throughout the rest of the song. Added bonus points for the Link Wray section where a simple yet eerie two or three note keyboard comes into play, and the closing utterance "We are The Fall" which I imagine was a declaration that the group were back and going nowhere. You can also dance to it....

Worth having a listen to the live version from the Hacienda. It begins without percussion and with the keyboard riff, before Paul (15) leaps across the stage to his drum kit for the rest of the song. It's dark, menacing and downright scary. Also includes giant moths. :D Sod it, we'll have two Youtube links.

Logically you're probably right being as the average Twitter reader can't cope with more than 30 words at a time. :wanker:

1984

Due to popular demand, I will from now on add a photo, hopefully from the correct year.

Image

Onto the music. 1984 saw Brix become a full time member, and her presence became immediately clear with a new fresh Fall sound. Gone is the dense heavy sound of PBL, awesome as that was, here the group are now brimming with confidence. MES himself sounds almost cocky with his vocal delivery. This year gives us an album, 'The Wonderful And Frightening World Of The Fall', an EP 'Call For Escape Route' and two pop singles, 'Oh Brother' and 'c.r.e.e.p.'. I won't dwell on the singles as they're not amazing apart from the b-sides, typical Fall, but prove the group are capable of an attempt at the hit parade. TWAFWOTF was, as the title suggests, wonderful and frightening. The frightening ones being 'Elves' with it's dark 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' bassline and 'Craigness' with the most hideous scream MES ever delivered. The rest were just wonderful. Apart from 'Bug Day'. Of the EP, 'No Bulbs' stands out as another cocky MES delivery, big, brash and full of fun.

My choice this time should go to 'No Bulbs', but there's one from the album I can't ignore. 'Disney's Dream Debased' fully explains the phrase 'Wonderful and Frightening' - a tune so lilting and delightful coupled with a subject matter so dark and terrifying. A quiet strum along with lyrics depicting MES and Brix's witnessing of an horrific fairground accident that saw a woman's head decapitated while Mickey and Pluto smiled and greeted the kids. Brix's haunting refrain of "Disney" every so often is particularly effective on this. It's something only The Fall could pull off, and I have no embarrassment admitting it has had me in bits on many occasions.

This took me an hour to write as RM Jnr's cat has finally fucked off and I have to keep comforting Mrs RM who's missing the bloody thing.

I don't have time to re-decorate now, I'm far too busy writing these things to an evergrowing fanbase - 5 likes and a re-tweet already for this one. B-)

I wonder what a re-tweet is....
