1981

A quieter year release wise, only eight studio songs being issued (I've checked dannynomates, so don't be coming the clever cunt). At least seven of them however were stone cold classics, including everything from the LP/EP 'Slates', so as usual I'm left with a difficult choice.

So what to pick from this illustrious list? Well curiously it's not one from 'Slates', nor is it 'Lie Dream' which was 1981's single. I mentioned in Greasy Roads' 45's review that I wasn't a huge fan of that song, but the b-side was terrific. Yes, my choice for 1981 is 'Fantastic Life'. The difference we have here is the sheer volume, probably due to the return of Karl Burns giving us an extra drummer. Presumably Karl was required to assist Paul Hanley (by now 13) as school homework needed to be done, but MES just used the two drummers anyway so the homework could go to hell. It's the usual great work from Steve Hanley, a monstrous bassline, quirky keyboards from Marc Riley and Craig Scanlon's trademark chattery guitar, but TWO drummers adds another sound level that the rest have to keep up with if they want to be heard. Meanwhile MES has developed a new style of lyric writing that I for one cannot fathom, so I'm not going to attempt deciphering what he's on about here. It's all the more difficult when he does a verse after a minute or so with different words coming out of each speaker. Of course this is no criticism, just another mark (no pun intended) of his genius.

And following the untimely event of January this year, I suspect a lot of Fall fans chose this as their appreciation of Mark's career.

So thoughtful of MES to hire Karl Burns to keep a fatherly eye on young Paul Hanley.

Ah but does Greasy Roads put links to the songs in his reviews? Does he fuck, he just likes to show off his flash turntable which probably doesn't work for all we know.

1982

A massive year for The Fall, mostly in a good way but things were to end up a bit messily. Of the music though, a lot more to digest than the previous year, an album, a single and a mini-album, all bar the odd track being of excellent quality. Hex Enduction Hour was The Fall's loudest album to date, as with last year's 'Fantastic Life', the Paul Hanley (14) / Karl Burns double drumming necessitated all instruments cranked up to the max. This was achieved with awesome results. 'Hip Priest' and 'Iceland' were recorded in a cave near Reykjavik and contained quieter more reserved passages, equally compelling, although even here the former had it's moments of ear-bending volume. The 'Look Know' / 'I'm Into CB' single was hot on HEH's heels followed by the mini-album Room To Live later in the year. That was an oddly muted affair compared to HEH, but still contained some original and classic moments, the title track and 'Solicitor In Studio' being a couple of my favourites. However things were not well in the camp, MES and Marc Riley were at loggerheads and by the end of the year Riley was out on his ear. :(

As always such a collection of magnificent songs makes it so hard to select just one, but I have to choose. I tend not to go for the obvious if possible, but this time it's unavoidable. 'The Classical' which opened HEH was of the standard all others would attempt to create but not quite match. A full on barrage of noise that smacked you in the face and left you for dead if you didn't appreciate it's awe. As so often the lyrics confound me, but "Where are the obligatory niggers" and "Hey there fuck face" did create some disagreements over what MES was trying to portray. I'm firmly convinced it's nothing racist, simply an observation of the racist taunts that back then were still sadly banded about. On a lighter note I remember a few years ago the Mother-in-law visiting, so I naturally put my headphones on. I burst into song at the "Kill it, Kill it, KILL IT!!!" part, and Mrs RM gave me a right bollocking for my troubles.
