Hi folks, sorry it's been so long but I've been having trouble with my ram and my hard drive. :(

My latest pairing...

Rainmaster
phpBB [video]

Cerebral Caustic was never the easiest of Fall albums to appreciate, but this track is worth the price tag alone. The title itself suggests you're in for a fantastic song, and I for one was not disappointed. This is the rough mix which I think adds even more to the quality, has Hanley's bass ever sounded better? I think not. MES meanwhile interjects throughout with the 'Rainmaster' refrain, "Rainmaster in New York, Rainmaster in Belgique, Rainmaster in Basingstoke" , that sort of thing. I'd give it top marks but what comes next is going to astound. 9/10. Actually no, fuck it, Rainmaster is a definite 10/10.

Pop Stickers (AKA 'Let's')

Bugger me in Betws Y Coed, does it get any better than this? I'm no fan of early Fall as I might have mentioned before, but this live gem from the Red Box is beyond belief. The gruppe are in electrifying form, Bramah with his distinctive scratchy guitar, Mike Leigh and Riley creating a stupendous rhythm section and MES of course providing such intelligent and thought provoking lyrics. Sadly when it came to recording a studio version though, they gave it a completely different tune and called it Chock Stock, and as we all know that song was dire thanks to Hanley and Scanlon's attempts at recreating this classic. For the original though, and easy 10/10

Highest scoring pair yet I think. :)

^^ Of course I'm right.

Evening all, here's my latest couple...

Midwatch 1953
phpBB [video]

Yes this is the track where MES systematically destroys all the fine work that went into the Unutterable album. MES has often been known to sound pissed, but here it seems like valium that is the dominant factor; he sounds on the verge of nodding off throughout, as he mumbles about what could have been foreseen in 1953. Nothing fits; nothing is in tune or time; there is no sense of it being within a million miles of what most people would recognise as a proper song; it’s overly long and self-indulgent, and as such it's complete and unutterable sheep's bollocks. 0/10

Hotel Bloedel
phpBB [video]

Lambs of Llangollen, did The Fall ever sound better than this? Beginning with (and continuing throughout) MES' awesome violin playing, a performance Nigel Kennedy would die for, Steve Hanley soon adds a dark brooding bassline along with Craig's scratchy guitar. But the star of the show is a young Brix, her vocals here have rarely sounded better, not even on Vixen, yes it's that good. Of course lyrically I can't understand a word of it - MES pops by twice and talks rather than sings about SS uniforms and Nuremberg without giving anything away, but that doesn't matter, here we have a timeless classic and a worthy 10/10.

There's just no way I could let you know if somebody called you a cloth-eared cunt with no redeeming features whatsoever in a PM. These things are just private.

I don't blame you not writing more, The Fall are finished and the forum is finished.

I'd pack up and go home but I like to come here and talk like a cunt.

:wanker:

OK, OK, here's my latest.

New Face In Hell
phpBB [video]

Roger me up the Rhonda, what a year 1980 was. I think most would opt for the brilliant and frankly scary 'Impression Of J Temperance' or the hit single 'Totally Wired' if you're in Connor's neck of the woods, but I'm going for one of the Peel session tracks, the one probably at the time that I enjoyed most. 'New Face In Hell' showcased just how brilliant MES' lyrics were becoming, and on this occasion it was easy to decipher the subject matter. Not just the storyline shone out though, the instrumentation was awesome too - a prominent keyboard riff from Marc Riley I assume along with SHanley's rumbling bass, new boy Paul Hanley's excellent drumming for a 12 year old, and Craig's guitar which can only be described as funky on this performance. Indeed on the Peel version it's made to sound like a primitive remix by removing the guitar briefly and having just the bassline and vocal do the work before the funkiness comes back even, erm, funkier! Of course that's not all. As we shall see later, and saw in the earliest years, The Fall are often best with a woman's touch, so Kay Carroll's magnificent kazoo playing here is of definite note. I've linked the Peel session as it's even better than the one off 'Grotesque'. 10/10
