 The "Fall In Twos" Blog

I'm going to take two Fall songs at a time and write a review about them in my blog.

OK I might not bother with the blog, sheep to be tended to and that sort of thing, but I shall write about two Fall songs here every day. Or week, if I can be arsed. :)

Here's my first duo of Fall hits....

Smile
phpBB [video]

Hmm, it's OK, a bit tinny sounding though. Could do with a woman's touch. And a tune. 3/10

Noise.
phpBB [video]

Oh this is much more like it, a barrage of Fall noise obviously inspired by Eleni, a woman, with her squelchy keyboards while mad random guitars intersperse the mix. MES berates his long suffering guitar player Pete Greenway before seemingly backing down when the guitar kicks in properly , "here he is now...", it's astounding. MES carries on about spurryheads and warriors of the dark forest amid the cacophony surrounding him, it's all in all a triumph of the man's talents. 10/10

Thanks for your thoughtful contribution In The North, always appreciated.

Interestingly....

Hit The North
phpBB [video]

I never liked this one, much like The NWRA, it seems to be an ode to the poor Northerners who as we all know are forever to be languishing in poverty and despair. The video features an old Leyland Atlantean @ 1m 41s for anyone interested. 4/10

Mollusc In Tyrol
phpBB [video]

Much much better, MES and the gang seem to be down a well with a swarm of wasps buzzing all around. Mark repeats "I'm a mollusc, look" ad nauseam while the group scratch away at their instruments. Later in the track, the vocal is lost while the instrumentation descends into a tuneless dirge that seems to go on forever before more unfathomable words are spoken. It's an absolute masterpiece, 10/10.

That's quite enough, I will not have female ex Fall members treated in such a misogynistic way.

Warning to Butch Cassady for his usual filth.

Anyway....

Wings
phpBB [video]

All Fall fans say this is one of their finest, sadly it isn't. Oh there's some arty wordplay for sure but those drums, endlessly pounding drums - is it Karl Burns or Paul Hanley? We just don't know, but endlessly they pound. Ruins it for me, 3/10.

I've Seen Them Come
We only have Hanleyvision to promote this gem.
phpBB [video]

Let joy be unconfined, can there be a better Fall song than this?

OK the lyrics are confusing...

I've been to Banding
I've been to Fong
I've been to Gong
I've been to Ban Hu
I've been to Fu Gong
I've been to Guangzhou
I've been to Praha-ha
I've been to Petakwai
I've been to Balthazar

....but the accompanying drums are sensational. Keiron bangs on his skins relentlessly as if his life depended on it, it's magnificent. Who could do that for six minutes plus, once again we are seeing Fall history here. Bang fucking bang. 10/10

I don't think the turquoise nail varnish works, a deep cerise would be more fitting with the black dress.

Sorry I missed a couple of nights but those sheep don't shag shear themselves, here's the next two. :)

Repetition
phpBB [video]

*At this point Mrs Steve starts rambling on about holidays and I have to advise her there's nothing wrong with a week in Aberdovey. This costs me an hour.*

Repetition, well no frankly we don't dig it, it's boring. "Repetition Repetition Repetition" as the man states, it's boring, Dull dull dull, boring boring boring, we don't dig repetition, it's boring, dull. Do we dig it? No we don't. Because it's boring. And dull. 2/10.

Monocard.
phpBB [video]

By Duw this is good, an eight minute trawl through the depths of MES' most pained life story repeated over and over again. Pete repeats a plaintive guitar chord over and over again, Dave does the same with a deep bass rumble and Keiron drums slowly and repetitively in the background. Add on Eleni's occasional synth sweep that repeats throughout the song and MES' repeated growl of "Monocard", and what we have here is a true Fall classic. 10/10, I'll say it again, 10/10.

Here's tonight's duo of hits.

Elves
phpBB [video]

After the opening pleading of "When will the price of Scotch come down?" we're treated to a dark brooding Fall track, mesmerising in it's sinister tones it is. I think I might be the only person though who hears The Stooges 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' when I listen to this, just listen to the descending bass riff throughout the song to see what I mean. It's astounding, 10/10

Idiot Joy Showland
phpBB [video]

This on the other hand is terrible, a bland uninteresting dirge of a tune from an album that specialises in the tedious. If I'm not mistaken I'd say the line about "sportsman's tears" is about Gazza, and I'm not often mistaken. You heard it here first folks. 3.5/10

Actually I said it first in 2013 on buzzliteyr's Anally Retentative Fall website. Everyone else may have talked about it 23 years previously but I'm the first to have actually written down anywhere, and I know none of you will be bothered to look up whether that's right or not.

Next two...

I Wake Up In The City
phpBB [video]

Lesu Grist this is awful, a barrage of garage noise that pummels you into submission. It's almost unlistenable, mixed to make your ears bleed and MES about dies coughing @1m27s, it's just dreadful. 1/10 :(

My Ex Classmates Kids
phpBB [video]

No number of listens can detract from the fact this is top-quality Fall garage punk. I've heard the tune somewhere before, but no idea where. This is the absolute bees knees, totally original and with a tune to die for, MES should have been very proud of this. 10/10

So much time, so little to do. :D

How I Wrote Elastic Man
phpBB [video]

EaRly Fall is always troublesome to me, not least because it's so repetitive, I may have mentioned this before. This one uses the same loop of musicianship throughout and it gets a bit dull if I'm honest. MES can't even get the ode to those fine indie popsters Elastica right as he rants on about "Plastic Man" rather than the titled "Elastic Man", and the record sleeve is so unoriginal as it appears to reflect on my avatar. :wtf: 3/10

O! Zztrrk Man
phpBB [video]

What can I say? Classic garage punk with a grinding repetitive guitar played in a cellar with MES interjecting his lyrics from the broom cupboard, it's totally brilliant. Like all Fall songs I don't know what the lyrics are all about but maybe we read too much into these things, at least he's not being smug, self satisfied. I truly believe if MES hadn't passed away, the next album would have been made up entirely of this sort of tune, sadly we shall never find out. :( 10/10

Taking Off
phpBB [video]

Gosh this is average, not unpleasant but smooth and sleek unlike most of EGB. MES harps on about Bonjela which I gather numbs pain but the song manages that quite easily. Real Fall fans swear by this but not me. 4.75/10

Shake Off
phpBB [video]

Wow this is what I want, fast garage punk referencing Simple Minds and injecting the eyeballs with Domestos (don't we all?) is what The Fall are all about imo. A lot of Fall fans hate this barrage of noise but not me. 9.753/10
